I've written this before

The sign that something big is going to happen from the Bush administration is when they start taking fire from the Right. This UN thing has people who would normally be Bush supporters wondering if W has gone wobbly. SDB points out 2 things - Wolfowitz is for it, and France and Germany are against it.

It seems kind of silly that W would be getting skittish on Iraq when even Howard Dean says that we can't afford to pull out. I've had a crisis of confidence in Bush before, but I was wrong.

We will not tire, we will not falter, we will not fail.

Paul Wolfowitz on Iraq

In today's Opinion Journal, a piece by Paul Wolfowitz.

Foreign terrorists who go to Iraq to kill Americans understand this: If killing Americans leads to our defeat and the restoration of the old regime, they would score an enormous strategic victory for terrorism--and for the forces of oppression and intolerance, rage and despair, hatred and revenge. Iraqis understand this. Alongside us, they are working hard to fight the forces of anger and hopelessness and to seize this historic opportunity to move their country forward.

Just as in the Cold War, holding the line in Berlin and Korea was not just about those places alone. It was about the resolve of the free world. Once that resolve was made clear to the Soviets, communism eventually collapsed. The same thing will happen to terrorism--and to all those who have attempted to hijack Islam and threaten America and the rest of the free world, which now includes Iraq. They will see our resolve and the resolve of the free world. Then they, too, will take their place on the ash heap of history.

For those who wonder if we will stick it out, I think that we can feel pretty confident that President Bush meant it when he said "We will not tire, we will not falter, we will not fail." His resolve is shown very clearly in Bush at War. And for all the talk about the 2004 elections, it's a 10 point race, which says to me that the American people support the President. We won the Cold War, through those decades of fear, through the trillions spent on defense, the proxy wars and the hot wars and the one we lost. But we still won.

Fascist, fanatic, and anti-American is no way to go through life, son.

Next reading recommendation

I also read The Cell: Inside the 9/11 Plot, And Why the FBI and CIA Failed to Stop It, by John Miller and Michael Stone. Just read it. I don't know why we bothered with a 9/11 commission, the whole story is right there.
